The California Collection
for Brilliant Earth
Conceptualizing a collection begins with a simple question: what do you call something that has never existed before?
I answered it by going home. Brilliant Earth was born in California, so I stopped looking at gemstone vocabulary and started looking at the landscape. Not gemology, but place. Pacific Green became the anchor, and the name ideas that followed were borrowed from the land: Malibu Blue, Tahoe Teal, Wildflower Pink, Desert Orange.
Example of direct mail.
Two gems, one place.
The second stone is a deep, luminous blue, and it needed a name that did more than describe its color. A name like “blue” tells you what you’re looking at. It doesn’t tell you how it feels to look at it. So I reached for Malibu: sun-bleached cliffs, deep blue water, the feeling of arriving somewhere. That is cultural equity you can’t manufacture. The name does the work, and the stone delivers on the promise.
Then came the name that unites them: California. Pacific Green and Malibu Blue are different in color and kindred in spirit, and California makes that kinship legible. Together, they are unmistakably the same place.
Developing a framework.
The California Collection is the foundation for Brilliant Earth’s proprietary gem program, a naming system I built to grow. Every future gem must be rooted in California’s geography and evocative enough to hold a campaign world in a few syllables: golden light, coastline, that West Coast energy that feels aspirational but attainable.
That is the real work of naming: not labeling a gem, but handing it a home.
